Most businesses can tell you what they do. Very few can tell you what they actually give. That distinction sounds subtle. It isn't. It is the difference between a business that delivers a product or service and one that delivers genuine value and it is the difference, over time, between relationships that compound and ones that quietly expire the moment a better alternative appears."

Wealth and abundance are often used as if they mean the same thing. They don't. Wealth is finite. It accumulates at the top of every system it touches. Abundance works differently, it honours the source by prioritising the needs of the people who generate value, so they can continuously create more.

I was recently shortlisted to speak at a CIO conference on Agentic AI. My first response, if I am honest, was something close to panic. I am not an AI expert. I have never claimed to be. But then something shifted and I realised that every model I have built over the past decade maps directly onto the AI conversation. Not as a metaphor. As a framework.

Alignment is not something you manufacture. It is something you uncover when you remove what is not true.

You can delegate responsibility. You can distribute accountability. But true ownership is something you hold, even as others contribute.

A leader whose identity is aligned doesn't have to manufacture emotion. It flows. A leader whose strategy is genuinely coherent doesn't have to argue for their logic. It speaks for itself. And a leader whose actions have consistently reflected their values over time doesn't have to claim credibility. It is simply present in the room.

Most leaders reach for familiar explanations. A capability issue. A motivation problem. The wrong people in the wrong roles. So they hire differently, restructure, introduce new incentives, run engagement surveys. Sometimes those things help. But often they don't - because they are addressing the symptom while the source goes untouched.

There is something most leaders rarely see, and it is the thing I find myself returning to again and again in my work: the leader is not separate from the problem. In most cases, the leader is the source of it.

Every leader moves through seasons - times of expansion, times of contraction, and times where the gap between who you are and who you want to be becomes impossible to ignore. No matter your title or tenure, leadership potential is shaped by the same two forces: desire and capacity.
